The Government has announced that those providing critical services and all essential workers and members of their households, who are showing symptoms of Covid-19, will now be able to get tested and as providers of critical services Postmasters and their assistants would qualify.
- In England and Scotland who are self-isolating can book their test online directly by visiting www.gov.uk/coronavirus and clicking on one of the options under “Testing for coronavirus (COVID-19)”.
- In Northern Ireland, click here: https://www.publichealth.hscni.net/covid-19-coronavirus/coronavirus-national-testing-programme-key-workers#how-to-arrange-testing
- In Wales, critical workers (health and social care workers) with symptoms should speak to their employer for advice on how to get tested. All other symptomatic critical workers can either apply online for a home testing kit or book a slot at a mass drive-through testing centre or mobile testing unit here: www.gov.wales/apply-coronavirus-test.
Please note, although the test will show if you have Covid-19 at the time of testing, it will not tell you if you have previously had Covid-19.
Types of testing
The Government has set up over 30 drive-through regional test centres and this will increase to up to 50 centres by the end of April. For all those involved in delivering critical services or essential workers, you can now book this type of test direct and you and your teams can do this by following the instructions below.
The Government are also introducing a range of additional testing methods to support testing accessibility, including home test kits. There are currently a limited number of these kits available, but availability will increase significantly by the end of April. The home test kits will be delivered by Amazon and sent directly to your home so you can perform the test yourselves. The completed tests will then be collected by Royal Mail couriers.
To start the process off you can access the Government portal using the links above. Once you have registered, you will receive a text with a 16-digit code and link from UK_Gov for a regional testing site, or an email with an invitation to order a home test kit. You can see the next steps in the process below. You can also register members of your household for a test using the same process.
Where you have a larger workforce
If you are a postmaster with a large team of employees you can support them by managing the test registration of any self-isolating staff or members of their household through an employers’ portal.
The first step is to email email@example.com for access to the portal. Please include your organisation name and sector, as well as the name and email address of up to two people who will use the portal. If you need further guidance and support you can contact DHSC at firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you are based in Wales, we will update you once we know more about the approach to testing there.
