Supporting the Covid-19 crisis in India

Over the past days, we’ve seen upsetting coverage of the Covid-19 pandemic in India.

We know that some Postmasters and their teams may have friends and relatives living in India, and this will be a worrying time for them.

We have partnered with the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) to help raise funds for their expanded coronavirus appeal now supporting India.

Through our partnership, customers can donate to DEC by cash or card over the counter at any of Post Office’s 11,500 branches.

Postmaster Atul Bathia, at The Broadway Post Office Wimbledon is fundraising for vital equipment. He said:

“Post Office is one family and this is the time to come together and make a national effort to support the relief efforts in India. People are dying every minute so there’s no time to lose.

“My team have already started an online fundraising campaign and you can donate to the DEC at every Post Office branch too. We’ve been overwhelmed by the support we’ve had and we’re not stopping until the virus is under control in the world’s most vulnerable regions.”

Nick Read, our Chief Executive said:

“As the UK begins to recover from Coronavirus it is incredibly sad to see the pandemic still causing huge suffering across the world. We know that many Postmasters may have friends and relatives living in India. And this will be a worrying time for them. I’m very proud that we can step up to play our part and provide 11,500 places for UK communities to donate to the DEC.”

Spreading the word…

We have issued a press release to media to help raise awareness that customers can pop into their local branch to donate funds. Read the press release here.

The DEC have a range of social media images you can use if you wish to promote this wider with your online community. You can access social media images here.

Guidance on how to process customer donations is available in Branch focus here.
